NIGHTINGALE

Book and lyrics by Chandler Warren, Music by Robert Miles).

This musical is suggested by the fairy tale, The Emperor's Nightingale by Hans Christian Andersen.   It is set in ancient China and tells the story of a nightingale which sang so beautifully it was given to the Emperor as a present.   The bird refused to sing in a cage so the Emperor has a mechanical bird made.   The Emperor's daughter has fallen in love with the gardener but the Grand Vizier wants to marry her himself.   It all works out in the end where the Princess and the gardener marry and the nightingale is allowed to be free and to sing beautifully for everyone.

The cast of the show consists of 11 speaking principals although by doubling that could be reduced to 9.   There is room for a chorus of any size needed or there doesn't need to be one.
